BOYLE'S LAW
|
Boyle's law states that the absolute pressure and volume of a given mass of confined gas are inversely proportional, if the temperature remains unchanged within a closed system. Thus, it states that the product of pressure and volume is a constant for a given mass of confined gas as long as the temperature is constant. The law was named after chemist and physicist Robert Boyle, who published the original law in 1662.
The law itself can be stated as follows: For a fixed amount of an ideal gas kept at a fixed temperature, P [pressure] and V[volume] are inversely proportional (while one doubles, the other halves). The mathematical equation for Boyle's law is: where: p denotes the pressure of the system. V denotes the volume of the gas. k is a constant value representative of the pressure and volume of the system. Boyle's law is used to predict the result of introducing a change, in volume and pressure only, to the initial state of a fixed quantity of gas. The before and after volumes and pressures of the fixed amount of gas, where the before and after temperatures are the same (heating or cooling will be required to meet this condition), are related by the equation: P1V1= P2V2 Here P1 and V1 represent the original pressure and volume, respectively, and P2 and V2 represent the second pressure and volume. |
Check out this video and solve the following problems .1. A balloon with a volume of 2.0 L is filled with a gas at 3 atmospheres. If the pressure is reduced to 0.5 atmospheres without a change in temperature, what would be the volume of the balloon?
2. A sample of hydrogen at 1.5 atm had its pressure decreased to 0.50 atm producing a new volume of 750 mL. What was its original volume? 3. A balloon contains 7.2 L of He. The pressure is reduced to 2.00 atm and the balloon expands to occupy a volume of 25.1 L. What was the initial pressure exerted on the balloon? |
